VAT on your sales

Last updated 3 November 2026

On Martiqo your listing prices are before VAT. When VAT is due on a sale, it is added on top — and the buyer sees the exact total, VAT included, before paying.

How VAT appears to your buyers

  1. You set your prices without VAT.
  2. When the buyer is about to pay, Martiqo asks Stripe to calculate the VAT for that buyer — based on your VAT registrations, where the buyer is and whether the buyer is a business with a VAT number.
  3. The buyer sees subtotal + VAT = total on the order page, then pays exactly that amount.
  4. The VAT collected is shown on the order, so you can account for it.

When is VAT added?

Stripe only adds VAT for countries where you are registered for VAT and have told Stripe so. If you are not VAT registered (for example a small business below your country's VAT threshold), no VAT is added and the buyer pays your listing price.

If you are VAT registered

  1. Open your shop's invoice identity, tick VAT registered and enter your VAT number.
  2. Martiqo then sets up VAT in your Stripe account automatically: your home-country VAT registration and your VAT number (shown on invoices).
  3. On your shop page, under Invoicing & VAT, you see whether the setup is complete.

Note

The VAT setup needs a completed Stripe onboarding for the shop (shop page → Payments).

How VAT is applied in the EU

BuyerWhat happens
Consumer in your own countryYour country's VAT is added.
Consumer in another EU countryYour country's VAT is added while your cross-border sales to EU consumers stay below the EU-wide threshold. Above it, the buyer's country's VAT applies — see One-Stop-Shop.
Business in another EU country with a valid VAT numberNo VAT is added (reverse charge — the buyer accounts for the VAT).
Buyer outside the EUUsually no EU VAT is added.

Stripe applies these rules for you based on the buyer's invoicing details on Martiqo. For your specific situation, ask your accountant.

EU One-Stop-Shop (OSS) and other countries

If you register for the EU One-Stop-Shop or for VAT in another country, add that registration on your shop page: Invoicing & VAT → Manage VAT registrations in Stripe. Add a registration only after you have registered with the tax office. From then on Stripe calculates VAT for buyers in those countries. You can end a registration there too.

What it costs

Calculating VAT is a paid Stripe feature: Stripe charges 0.5% of each order where VAT is calculated, plus €0.05 per VAT preview shown to the buyer. Example: on an €80.00 order, €0.45.

Martiqo collects these Stripe charges together with its platform fee and passes them to Stripe at cost. They are shown to you as Stripe fees — your Martiqo platform fee itself does not change. It only applies to orders where Stripe calculates VAT, i.e. when you have an active VAT registration.

Your responsibility

  • You are the seller, so the VAT on your sales is yours: you declare and pay it to the tax office.
  • Keep your invoice identity up to date — your VAT status and number drive what Stripe does.
  • Every sale also needs an invoice to the buyer — issued by you or by Stripe for you. See Issuing invoices yourself and Invoices issued by Stripe.
